A Sign of the Times: A Parenting Mag Goes Digital

Mothering magazine, which has been around for about 30 years, announced that it will now be publishing in digital format.

When I read the press release, I initially thought they were ceasing their print pub, but after checking with Mothering mag pr person, I stand corrected. She said it is simply another option.

I'm glad they haven't done away with the print version altogether (although one wonders whether they hope to move in that direction ultimately). I'm not one of those people who feels technology is destroying journalism; I do most of my news reading online and can't imagine a day without Google News. I also see the benefits to digital mags--they're searchable and provide links and can have multimedia capability. But they feel like poor substitutes for web sites or mags. They're neither. And I wonder if it's just a matter of time before digital mags go the way of CD-ROMs (remember them??)

Hi Pam,

Just spotted your blog thanks to your link to Workerette.com - just thought you'd like to know that the announcement is NOT that Mothering is going entirely digital. As I mentioned in my blog entry, it is only that they are now offering digital subscriptions (at a lower cost than print) in addition to their current print publication being offered. Just to make sure I wasn't confusing myself, I hit their website to verify before I spoke too soon. (I've been known to do that.)

Subscribers who really need lots of Mothering (pun intended) can even get a subscription that combines both the print and the digital versions. You can get all the details on their subscription page, located here: http://www.mothering.com/sections/subscribe/subscribe.html

I had to chuckle at your comment about the CD-ROMS for magazines, though. One of my homesteading/back to basics favorites, Backwoods Home Magazine, offers great subscription deals, including back issues on CD-ROM. Drives me nuts - I want the real deal, the paper in my hands. Maybe it's not as "green" as reading it on the 'puter, but I recycle, so that helps, right? ;-)

Best wishes, and thanks for linking to Workerette in your entry!

Thanks Melonie. I have a press release which someone sent to me--and now that I reread it, I realize it IS ambiguous. So I've sent email to pr person for the mag--clarification (or correction!) will be coming.
